Blatchford is a world leading rehabilitation provider with clinical expertise in prosthetics, orthotics, special seating and wheelchairs. We design and manufacture the multi award-winning Endolite range of lower limb prostheses and provide clinical services to the NHS, military and patients internationally. With 128 years of innovation and expertise behind us, we produce the world’s most advanced microprocessor artificial limbs.

We are now looking for a Materials Engineer to work closely with our Research & Development team in research, process development & technical support for all material related aspects of our new product development projects.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on new and exciting projects, working in conjunction with Engineers, Manufacturing Technicians and Clinicians to make a real difference to the lives of our patients.

As a Materials Engineer with Blatchford, you role will include:

  • Championing projects from initiation to pre-production
  • Development of testing
  • Delivering projects on time and within budget
  • Sharing scientific and technological skills with colleagues within the Research & Development team
  • Training of manufacturing technicians in new processes specific to new product launch
  • Reviewing regulatory requirements for medical devices to ensure compliance for new product development
  • Keeping abreast of new materials and technology
  • Over-check compliance to design, engineering details and product specification

In order to excel in this role, you will hold a degree in Material Science & Technology, or equivalent. Previous research & development experience in Thermoplastics & Thermosetting Polymers, composite, foam & elastomeric materials is desirable. You will also have a working knowledge of a number of technologies including injection moulding, carbon or glass fibre, polyurethane foam and synthetic elastomers.

The successful candidate will have an innovative approach to developing new products and manufacturing processes using own creative initiative and sound engineering principles. They will have the ability to discuss necessary design requirements with engineers and model shop technicians, and be able to interact on a technical level with other development and manufacturing departments as well as technical product suppliers.

This is a full time, permanent role; working hours are 36.5 hours per week on Monday to Friday with an early finish on a Friday.
