Coronavirus: Advice for Amputees

In this unprecedented time, we are closely monitoring the constantly changing COVID-19 pandemic and have plans in place to ensure continuity of care, while protecting the health of our employees, the community and those we serve.

In this time of uncertainty, we have compiled some information from qualified sources that you, as an amputee, may need to ensure your health and well-being.

Diabetic Patients

Coronavirus can affect anyone, but people with pre-existing health problems, such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at greater risk of developing severe symptoms. This patient population does not have a greater chance of contracting the virus, though they may be faced with more challenges in achieving a favourable outcome.

The American Diabetes Association has a useful page detailing all the information you need and will be able to answer any questions you may have. There is also information regarding access to insulin and other diabetes supplies.

Home Exercises

Maintaining your balance, muscle strength, flexibility and range of motion is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle as an amputee. At this time many health and fitness centres are closed and, you may have been advised to avoid going outside and may therefore disrupt your usual exercise program.

Limb Power has a useful page listing all the exercises you could try. As always please be sure to check with your physician or physical therapist before beginning any of these exercises.

Your Emotional Wellbeing

For many people, this will be a scary situation that severely affects your mental wellbeing and while it is important to be informed of the situation, there are some things you can do to manage at this time.

The Mental Health Foundation provides some helpful tips to help you, your friends and family can do to look after your mental health.

Hygiene

As well as being essential for your mobility, caring for the skin on your residual limb is particularly important at this time in order to reduce the risk of infection.

Establishing a regular care routine and understanding how to identify some of the early warning signs will help prevent you from being unable to use your prosthesis for an extended period of time.

Your Appointments

Many clinics have taken actions to protect their staff and patients during this time as well as comply with local laws and regulations. Your clinic may have reduced the number of appointments available, reduced to emergency appointments, moved to look after the most vulnerable patients, utilising online video appointments or using screening protocols.

It is recommended to contact your clinic online for any questions you may have and to check websites/email regularly to make sure you have the up to date information.

There are many campaign groups, support groups and charities for the amputee community, at both a national and local level.

A network of patient advocacy groups is available throughout North America to provide you with guidance, educational, financial and emotional support and job skills training.
