Blatchford helping Haiti disaster victims

some of the Haiti shipment |
Blatchford has been taking part in the global effort to provide assistance to the people of Haiti following the earthquake in January. An estimated 4,000 people lost limbs resulting from injuries suffered in the 7.0 magnitude quake. The need for large numbers of artificial limbs, which can be fitted quickly, meant that the Atlas Limb system, developed by Blatchford for just such traumatic disasters, was the ideal solution for this scale of need. Blatchford has shipped 500 artificial leg systems which will be fitted to amputees under the auspices of the Medishare Group, a Miami based charity. The limbs will be fitted at the Medishare 240-bed ‘Tent’ hospital on the fringes of Port-au-Prince airport.
Those who lost limbs will need prolonged treatment and rehabilitation because the amputations carried out in the chaotic aftermath of the earthquake were often “Guillotine” amputations. In the effort to save lives surgeons quickly amputate straight across the limb, to release the victim from rubble or stop the spread of infection. The resulting amputation is therefore without the usual muscle layer at the end of the limb for healing and cushioning when the artificial limb is fitted. In these circumstances specialist limb fitting and manufacture is required to ensure that amputees can be rehabilitated safely and comfortably.

Alan Finieston, a Miami based prosthetist working with the Medishare team, will be using sophisticated computer aided design
equipment to electronically capture the shape of the amputated limb. The digital files will be emailed to Miami where they will be
used to create computer manufactured sockets which will be assembled quickly onto the Atlas Limb systems ready for shipment
back to Haiti and fitting. The Atlas Limbs can be assembled and adjusted simply and quickly using very basic tools and will allow
repeated updates to alignment and set-up during the rehabilitation process |

The Medishare Group team in Haiti will now begin the task of restoring Haitians to full mobility so that they can start to re-build their homes and lives once again. |

About Atlas:
Atlas is a limb system with integral cosmetic cover designed for ease of assembly and fitting. The simplicity of the system means it is ideal for limb fitting in an area where there are many amputees and few experienced prosthetic technicians.
The moulded components are very quick to assemble, simply cut to correct height, align socket and reposition cosmesis. Set up adjustments are easily repeatable with a few basic tools.
About Medishare:
In an effort to improve the health status of the Haitian population, the Haiti Project of the University Of Miami , Miller School Of Medicine has established in 1998 a unique partnership with the Northern Health Department of Haiti and Hôpital Universitaire Justinien, the second largest public hospital of Haiti.
This 11-year collaborative endeavor has allowed the implementation of various programs aiming at building and improving the capacity of the hospital to meet the needs of the population and the overall Haitian health care system. Their philosophical approach is crystallised in these three words: Respect – Excellence – Compassion
