Material Technologist /Polymer Scientist/Engineer, Basingstoke

TWI Ltd and Blatchford are pleased to announce receiving a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Award to develop a novel interface liner product for application in artificial limbs.

TWI is one of the world's foremost research and technology organisations. From bases in UK, USA, China, Malaysia and Middle East, 700 staff provide technical support in joining and technologies such as material science, structural integrity. NDT, surfacing, electronic packaging and cutting. Services include contract R&D, technical information, consultancy, standards drafting, training and qualification. TWI offers a single, impartial source of service for joining engineering materials.
Chas A Blatchford and Sons limited (www.blatchford.co.uk, www.endolite.com) is an award-winning, innovative Company specialising in the design and manufacture of external prosthetic and orthotic products and provision of patient services to NHS and MoD. Blatchford facilities are located in UK, France, Germany, USA and partnership in India. Based in Basingstoke Hampshire, Blatchford Product limited R&D department has a team of 25 dedicated bio medical engineers, mechanical, electronic and mechatronic control design engineers, material scientists and have purpose build model shop, various polymer, plastic, composite, hydraulic, gait analysis and electronic laboratories. Blatchford group employs over 500 staff and have won 4 Queens Award for innovation during last 4 decades. In its 121st year Blatchford is listed in the top 10 most innovative companies in UK in 2011.

The three year project includes; research and development of a novel range of socket interfaces for prosthetic application. We are seeking a specialist Material Technologist /Polymer Scientist/Engineer with polymer formulation, product design, surface morphology experience. The successful candidate will hold a degree or post graduate qualification in a relevant subject and will ideally have already gained some industrial experience in the medical device industry.

This is a “hands-on” position requiring you to conduct much of your own research and development. You will be able to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of:

• H&S and regulatory controls of materials
• Quality standards for manufacturing
• Efficient and secure manufacturing processes
• New materials and technology
• Information retrieval (searches)
• Documentation

In addition we are searching for a team player.

• Able to set and achieve realistic goals and targets
• A good communicator possessing interpersonal skills
• Receptive to others’ views
• Self motivated and remain focused throughout the duration of the project

Due to the nature of this role, you will be required to work within time constraints and deadlines. This role is based in Basingstoke, Hampshire and will require occasional travel to TWI in Cambridge.

Following successful completion of this project there may be opportunities for further employment with the industrial or academic partner.
